Friday 13th February is World Radio Day and Magenta Radio will once again be taking part in the celebrations. Proclaimed in 2011 by UNESCO and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as an International Day, World Radio day continues to remind us of the ever important power of radio as a medium; as it entertains, informs and gives previously unheard voices a platform.
This year's theme is "Radio and AI". Today Artificial Intelligence (AI) opens a new chapter: not just for innovation but for deepening their bond with listeners. When used ethically and responsibly to support professional judgement, creativity and public service values, AI can become an ally in strengthening audience trust. Technology alone does not build trust. Radio broadcasters do.
AI is a tool, not a voice.
Let’s treat this moment as a transformative opportunity to elevate these and every aspect of radio broadcasting. On World Radio Day 2026, UNESCO gives radio stations the resources to build confidence in how AI is used, all while preserving the warmth and reliability that audiences cherish.
Throughout the whole of February, Magenta Radio will air a series of short clips created by UNESCO called 'World Radio Day Minutes'. These 1 minute long segments explain the origins of radio broadcasting, how it's been used in various industries and how it impacts people's lives, as well as celebrating all the unique facets radio has to offer. These will air at various times throughout the day. To find out more about World Radio Day and to get involved please click here.
